  1. The Adaptation Fund has been established by the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to finance concrete adaptation projects and programmes in developing countries that are Parties to the Kyoto Protocol. The Fund will be financed with 2% of the Certified Emission Reduction (CERs) issued for projects of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and with funds from other sources.

The ACCCA project draws on lessons learned about communicating climate risk information in clear terms that are relevant to decision-makers; addressing climate risks and adaptation in an integrated, multidisciplinary way; the importance of engaging stakeholders substantively; and the long-term benefits of partnering institutions from scientific and policy communities for understanding and managing climate change risks.
  3. Climate change poses great challenges to society. The effects of climate change will constrain the ability of developing countries to reach their sustainable development objectives under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). As the UNDP mission includes safeguarding the MDGs, its Strategic Plan makes a commitment to integrating adaptation to climate change in all UNDP work.
